Welcome from the Chair – Professor Raj Das

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

Welcome to the 16th International Conference on Fracture (ICF-16), Melbourne, Australia, 2027.

It is my honour to announce the ‘Olympics of Fracture Mechanics’ with the 16th International Conference on Fracture (ICF-16) - a premier quadrennial global event celebrating research, innovation and collaboration across the fields of structural integrity and failure analysis.

Melbourne, a vibrant cultural hub and bustling city in Australia, awaits to welcome you for ICF-16 to be held from 28 June to 2 July 2027 in our expansive and modern RMIT University campus in the heart of the city.

The theme of ICF-16 is ‘Structural Integrity for Sustainability & Circular Economy’. ICF series, initiated in 1965, has a long tradition and history and will be organised by the Australian Fracture Group and RMIT University.

The topic of Fracture Mechanics reverences ‘Old is Gold’. It is a classical foundation and cornerstone of engineering science, underpinning primary engineering disciplines and pioneering advancements in the cutting-edge technologies in Aerospace, Mechanical, Civil, Chemical, Materials engineering and new interdisciplinary fields.

Fracture Mechanics addresses a broad range of areas, from conventional structural and mechanical designs, failure analysis, fatigue, and geomechanics to cutting-edge computational mechanics, nano-micro mechanics, multiscale mechanics, coupled multiphysics problems to address failure behaviour in novel materials and structures.

I cordially invite all researchers, academics, and industry professionals to share insights and explore how cutting-edge technology in structural integrity, fracture and fatigue assessment is shaping the future of sustainable engineering. This is truly reflected in the variety of fields featured in the conference topics.

With a comprehensive scientific and technical program, top-rated speakers’ lineup, blend of leading academia and industry participation, along with cultural warmth of modern Melbourne and unparalleled natural wonders of Australia, you are guaranteed to be rewarded with a rich and unforgettable experience.

I look forward to your participation and dynamic engagement at the forthcoming ICF-16.

See you in Melbourne in 2027.
